Downton Bowling Club
A welcoming lawn bowls facility in Downton, Wiltshire, Downton Bowling Club operates as a mixed club catering to players of varying abilities. Founded in 1980 by Ralph Bentley, a former President of the English Bowling Association, it began on the playing field behind Downton Primary School before relocating to its present site in 1983.
The club occupies a peaceful spot to the west of the village, adjacent to the Downton Leisure Centre on Wick Lane. Its full-size outdoor green supports seven rinks, with play directions rotated periodically to maintain the surface evenly. A dedicated clubhouse provides essential amenities, while membership grants access to the neighbouring Brian Whitehead Sports and Social Club for additional social facilities.
Affiliated with Bowls England and Bowls Wiltshire, the club participates in leagues including Salisbury and District, New Forest, and Bournemouth and District. Competitive matches feature alongside internal tournaments and friendly fixtures. The club hosts touring teams from across the country, fostering encounters between members and external players.
Social bowling sessions encourage relaxed play and coaching opportunities. During colder months, activities shift indoors to short mat bowls, complemented by coffee mornings. The club maintains an inclusive approach, extending membership to newcomers and experienced bowlers alike, with provisions for accessibility including wheelchair use on the green.
Members contribute to upkeep, supported by initiatives such as irrigation improvements and equipment upgrades. Annual events with nearby groups, like the local football club, reinforce community ties.
