The Cuckoo Fair

The Cuckoo Fair

The Downton Cuckoo Fair is a lively community event in the village of Downton, Wiltshire. It has been running since at least the late 1970s, with its 40th anniversary marked in 2019 by a special parade of classic cars and an opening from the mayor of Salisbury.

After a pause during the pandemic, it came back in 2022 and keeps drawing big crowds each year.

Essentially, it is a traditional village fair packed with family-friendly fun, from stalls selling crafts and gifts to food vendors and entertainment. The whole thing helps raise money for local charities and groups, supporting the community around Downton.

It usually happens on the Saturday of the first bank holiday in May, which can sometimes fall at the end of April. For instance, in 2025 it was on the 3rd of May, running from morning until late afternoon.

Activities spread out across spots like the Memorial Gardens and nearby areas, with things like rural craft demos, Punch and Judy shows, clowns wandering about, and fairground rides. There is also dancing, including Maypole and Morris dancers, plus music from the Downton Brass Band and other live acts.

The fair is put together by a dedicated team, with support from local sponsors. If you are thinking of going, they recommend leaving pets at home because it gets busy, and there are tips for stallholders on setting up early.

Overall, it is a classic British village fair vibe, full of charm and good causes.
